NaNoWriMo–One of the Best Things Ever

Well, it’s that time of year again: November. And with November comes a ton of my favorite things: crunching leaves, Thanksgiving, countdown to Christmas, the new Hunger Games movie, and NaNoWriMo.

NaNoWriMo is so exciting, fun and–at times–frustrating to me. Writing is the only thing that I’m good at and like to do, so a whole month dedicated to it–in a extremely challenging way–is awesome to me. I’m not going to lie that it’s no easy task. NaNoWriMo is awesome but it’s also met with many long hours of frustration and anger, racking my seemingly empty brain for any sort of idea that I could throw up on the page. When I get to this point, there is something that I do that helps me generate more ideas. It sounds rather stupid, but it really does work.

I turn my novel into a musical. Yeah, it sounds stupid. Hear me out. I tell myself that my novel is now a musical and sit down to right. Then I turn on the radio, Pandora, or the shuffle on my iPod. Whatever song comes on is put into my ‘musical’. I have to decide what characters would sing it, why they would sing it, and what the context of the plot would have to be for the song to make sense. Obviously, the song doesn’t stay in the novel, but it’s a great brainstorming exercise that works great for me. Who knows, maybe it will for you too.

Good luck out there! Keep on writing to reach that awesome word goal 🙂
